RAFTING THE ILLINOIS RIVER
by Lee Juillerat

We visit the personal home, studio, school and 800-acre agricultural estate of the eccentric architect, where the unexpected scandal of seven savage slaughters loomed even larger than the existing saga of Frank Lloyd Wright's reputation when he built this home in 1911 for himself and the woman for whom he had left his first wife and six children.

Rather than concentrating on Food Street as so many people do, we went farther out, revisiting one of our fav unsung spots, sampling a couple of places from the area’s “Dumpling Trail,” diving into Korean shave ice and, of course, the weekend night market.

Mention the Illinois River and most folks go, "Huh!" or, "Where's that?"The Illinois begins at the crest of the Siskiyou Mountains near the Oregon-California border. The river makes a brief appearance off Highway 199 near Cave Junction before turning reclusive, tumbling through the coastal mountains of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.

AWAY IS HOME: What to do when you never want your family vacation to end
by Christopher Elliott

Since the rise of cities, humans have strived against all odds to escape and get back to the wilderness to refresh themselves. Whether it's camping trips, climbing distant mountain peaks, or just day trips to nearby parks, the quest for outdoor experiences is part of our DNA. We can't all just pick up and go on our own two feet, however.

Selecting portions of the Petén region of northern Guatemala, southern Mexico and western Belize – known location for hundreds of ancient Maya cities – the 3D laser map stripped away the canopy to reveal more than 60,000 previously unknown buildings, walls, ceremonial caves and road systems.

I have some insights into ways you can leave a popular vacation destination without the separation drama. They include setting the right expectations for your family, keeping them focused on the next adventure, and ending on a high note.

MAUI FOR SINGLES
by Hawaii Web Group

The stories of cities, like those of people, can be best understood by learning about their inner life. Five Detroit area interiors - three commercial spaces and two former private homes - reflect chapters in the city’s vibrant history.

Once the province of family vacations and honeymoons, Maui has become increasingly renowned as the "it" place for singles. And is it any wonder? With its ‘Grammable landscapes, award-winning dining scene, and abundance of activities, it’s the perfect place to find yourself—or your next S.O. (even if it’s just a holiday romance).
